Serious Accident
Drinking and driving can result in serious consequences and ultimately end in tragedy. Drivers who drink and drive not only put their own life in jeopardy, but also the lives of countless other drivers. The Marietta Police Department Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (S.T.E.P.) is currently investigating a serious injury accident which occurred November 2, 2010, a little before 9:30 pm, on Cobb Parkway North at Elizabeth Street. While no conclusion has yet been made regarding the causes of the crash, alcohol is believed to be a factor.
The initial investigation revealed that a Honda Accord driven by a 50-year-old Marietta woman, was traveling north on Cobb Parkway next to a Ford Super Duty truck driven by a 36-year-old Acworth man. During the accident, the Accord drifted from its lane and struck the Ford Super Duty vehicle. That caused both vehicles to lose control, depart the roadway and then overturn.
The woman was transported by ambulance to Kennestone Hospital and was in good condition. The man however, was not as lucky. He had to be extricated from his vehicle and was subsequently flown to Atlanta Medical Center. He remains there in critical condition. The man’s name is currently being withheld pending notification of his family.
As mentioned earlier, alcohol was believed to be a factor and charges are pending against the Marietta woman. She was arrested a day after the accident for failure to maintain lane, driving under the influence of alcohol and serious injury by motor vehicle. She is currently being held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center on $50,000 bond.
Conclusion
While the investigation discussed above is still ongoing, the fact remains that drinking and driving can have serious consequences. Whether alcohol played a factor in this case does not change the fact that there are far too many injuries and fatalities as a result of drunk driving. Without people holding themselves accountable and without an increased sense of responsibility there will continue to be unnecessary tragedies. Things need to change and they need to change right away.
