The Christmas holiday period takes its toll in Georgia as a 17-year-old Roswell woman was tragically killed Christmas morning after being ejected and struck by a hit and run driver on I-285 near Ashford Dunwoody Road. Devon McKniff, deceased, was a passenger in the truck driven by Victor Cardajal-Altamirano who was later found to have been driving under the influence. Upon impact with a retention wall, the truck overturned and ejected McKniff onto the I-285 roadway wherein she was subsequently struck by a Mercury Cougar that failed to stop at the scene of the accident. Eyewitnesses then followed the hit and run vehicle to the Buford Highway exit where the Cougar then left the roadway, hit a tree and killed its male driver. Cardajal-Altamirano, the lone survivor of this unfortunate accident was subsequently charged with vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, failure to maintain lane and driving without a license.
Overall, 17 people died on Georgia’s roads and highways over the holiday period which was 4 more than officials had initially predicted.
