Today, several days after Minnesota health officials found salmonella bacteria in a five pound tub of peanut butter manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America, Peanut Corporation of America announced a voluntary recall of the peanut butter produced in its Blakely, Georgia facility.

They voluntarily recalled these products because of the potential for salmonella contamination. The products affected, FDA announced, were produced on or after July 1, 2008.

The peanut butter was sold by the Peanut Corporation of America to distributors for “institutional and food service industry use.” The brand it was sold under was Parnell’s Pride. King Nut Company also was another label this peanut butter was sold under.

FDA said that the Peanut Corporation of America is notifying its customers who received the product by telephone and in writing. “None of the peanut butter being recalled is sold directly to consumers through retail stores.”

The Peanut Corporation of America is recalling 21 lots of its peanut butter. They come in containers ranging from 5 pounds to 50 pounds.

FDA provided the lot numbers and descriptions of those recalled.

Lot numbers include: 8193, 8194, 8197, 8233, 8234, 8235, 8241, 8255, 8256, 8275, 8276, 8282, 8283, 8284, 8296, 8316, 8330, 8331, 8336, 8345, 8354.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have suggested peanut butter is the likely source of the national outbreak of salmonella poisoning. The Minnesota Department of health and Minnesota Department of Agriculture found the same genetic fingerprint of contamination in the peanut butter that matched the reported cases of salmonella poisoning nationwide.

Salmonella poisoning can become a dangerous sickness. If you have eaten peanut butter, look out for these symptoms of salmonella: Diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.

These symptoms can last from 12 to 72 hours after a person is infected. According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the salmonella infection is “usually diagnosed by culture of a stool sample.” The sickness usually lasts four to seven days. Salmonella can also spread from “the intestines to the bloodstream and then to other body sites and cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics. In some cases, treatment is necessary.
