While crossing a street in Atlanta, a woman was struck by a Cobb County transit bus. The impact was so severe that one of her legs was completely detached from her body and the other severely damaged.
According to Capt. Jolyon Bundridge of the Atlanta Fire and Rescue Department, “It appears a portion of the bus rolled over her legs.”
The accident happened just after 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Hamilton E. Holmes and Martin Luther King Jr. drives. She was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. Her identity is not known at this time.
The woman lost a leg and a foot, Sgt. Curtis Davenport of the Atlanta Police Department said.
The woman allegedly saw the bus approaching as it pulled out of the Hamilton Holmes MARTA station, because she tried to cross the street faster, according to Krystle McGuire, a witness. But, the driver hit her and kept on going.
People were yelling at the bus driver as he approached the woman, but he kept going, even after he struck her, McGuire said.
The bus driver will be “removed from service” until an investigation into the accident is completed, said Robert Quigley, a Cobb County spokesman.
