The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Agriculture on October 10th initiated a food defense awareness training kit for first line food industry employees. The FDA launched this tool kit to help in keeping OUR food supply safe.

The First Took Kit focuses on five key points industries and businesses should utilize in educating first line workers about the Risks of Food Contamination. As described on the FDA website, the key points are:

F – FOLLOW company food defense plan and procedures

I – INSPECT your work area and surrounding areas

R – RECOGNIZE anything out of the ordinary

S – SECURE all ingredients, supplies and finished product

T – TELL management if you notice anything unusual or suspicious

FDA offers these kits free to employees. Inside the kit is a DVD, training poster and on-screen instructions. For consumer advice on food safety, check out the FDA website.

Sustaining food injuries from contaminated foods is serious and can result in further injuries. Signs of food contamination include:

  • Severe Vomiting
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Trouble with Vision
  • Dehydration
  • Trouble Breathing
  • Trouble Speaking
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Trouble Swallowing
  • Severe Diarrhea
  • Fever over 100°F

Food injury is not to be taken lightly in circumstances when injuries do result. In some cases, these injuries can have lasting effects.

For those who have sustained serious food injuries and/or sickness you may want to contact the attorneys at Childers, Buck, and Schlueter to see how they can help protect your legal rights.
