After Vioxx was removed from the market in 2004, many former Vioxx users started taking Celebrex as a safer alternative for arthritis pain. A recent study from the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand has shown that Celebrex may not be as safe as once thought when compared with other arthritis treatments.
Institute Director Richard Beasley noted:
“These findings are critical as the risk is similar in magnitude to the 2.24-fold increased risk of heart attack with Vioxx. Given the popularity of celecoxib (Celebrex) in the treatment of arthritis … drug regulatory authorities need to urgently re-examine the assessment of the drug in light of these findings”
