Joy Day, the Mayor of Jonesboro, Georgia, came home to find his house in a much different state than the way he left it earlier this yesterday morning. The reason for this drastic change has been attributed to an unnamed 17-year old driver that was involved in a high speed chase with authorities earlier in the day. The driver reportedly stole the vehicle he was in and upon being chased by the authorities, lost control of the vehicle and slammed into the Mayor’s front porch. Thankfully no one was at home during the crash. Neither the driver nor his passenger was seriously hurt in the car crash but extensive property damage was done to the residence.
In addition to the homeowners insurance which usually carries a high deductible, a viable claim for damages may be available under the one’s underinsured or underinsured motorist coverage in situations like this. UM coverage as it is more commonly called is designed to provide coverage to situations where the at fault driver either has no insurance or does not have enough coverage to cover the damages and injuries they cause. It often times either has no deductible at all or in most instances will have a deductible that is much lower than that of typical homeowners policies. It is just another thing to think about when crazy situations like this come up.
