Eye Infections Not Reported By Bausch & Lomb

According to a federal letter, Bausch & Lomb, Inc. failed to formally report 35 new cases of fungal eye infections after its contact lens solutions were linked to the problem. The report details that Singapore health officials notified the Rochester, New York Company as well as the FDA about the problems associated with the company’s products. Bausch & Lomb then failed to release this information on April 7, 2006, as required by law, even though the company had previously stopped selling the ReNu with MositureLoc product in both Singapore and the US at that time.

According to the AJC:

Bausch suspended sales of MoistureLoc in Singapore and Hong Kong in February and U.S. sales in April. It initiated a global recall in May. The company later acknowledged the brand of solution was the potential “root cause” of increased risk of the fungal infection, called Fusarium keratitis.

Ultimately, health official reported several hundred cases of Fusarium keratitis in parts of Asia and the United States.
