Atlanta Steps Up To Help Victims And Families Of Fatal Georgia Bus Accident

Comments Off

In the aftermath of the recent Atlanta Georgia bus crash on I-75 involving the Bluffton University baseball team, many organizations and people in and around Atlanta, Georgia are lending a hand to those players and families who were involved.

“We are looking to help in any way we can,” said James Rissler, pastor of the Atlanta Mennonite Fellowship, who has been in touch with Bluffton University since the crash. The university is affiliated with the Mennonite Church USA.
“We are still waiting to hear from people on how they would like us to do that. Our communities are in prayer. And we are exploring options to help.”

Other groups also have pitched in to try and help ease the shock and trauma associated with the deadly Georgia bus accident. The Buckhead baseball group, Georgia Tech, The Buckhead art college, and countless other churches and civic organizations joined in the efforts providing everything from food to transportation. Airtran offered free chartered flights to many family members affected by this bus crash and Delta offered free flights for others connected to the accident.

The local Red Cross has, as usual, also stepped in to help deal with the tragic turn of events.

“Understandably, they have been traumatized. They have been shaken,” said Ruben Brown, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter of the American Red Cross. “The Red Cross’ role is to try to soften the blow.”

Brenda Shelby, a native Atlantian and Mennonite, said what so many others are thinking at this point:

“We want to do whatever we can,” said the retired schoolteacher, who is a member of the East Atlanta Christian Fellowship, a Mennonite church. “My heart goes out to them.”
